The word ‘Burren’ comes from ‘Boireann’, or stony district, and refers to an area of spectacular terraced limestone hills and hidden valleys that form the northern part of County Clare. With a vast area of 130 square kilometres (50 square miles), the Burren is one of the largest karst limestone landscapes in Europe. It is also known as ‘The Fertile Rock’ due to its capability to produce a wide variety of wildflowers.
