ROUTE OVERVIEW The middle "Forest Stage" of the Hiraethog Trail. Leaving the village of Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr, you enter the vast Clocaenog Forest. This section is a mental and physical contrast to the open moors of Stage 1, replacing expansive views with the quiet, enclosed atmosphere of one of Wales’ largest woodlands.
THE TERRAIN The route is dominated by forestry fire roads and winding tracks through dense spruce plantations. While navigation is straightforward on the main tracks, the lack of distant landmarks can be disorienting. The route eventually follows the Afon Clywedog valley, dropping down into the secluded village of Cyffylliog.
CHALLENGE RATING Moderate. Physically less demanding than the open ridge lines, but the repetitive nature of the forestry tracks can be mentally taxing for endurance runners.
NOTE This file ends at Cyffylliog (Grid Ref: SJ 06017 57793), a key vehicle checkpoint for Mountain Craft support crews.
