Out and Back
“Experience the historic and wildlife-rich Nehasane Lake Road trail, a short but rugged and scenic Adirondack hike.”
Nestled in the heart of Hamilton County, New York, the Nehasane Lake Road trail offers a serene out-and-back hiking experience that spans approximately 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) with minimal elevation gain, making it accessible for hikers of varying abilities. Despite its relatively short distance, the trail is rated medium difficulty due to the rugged terrain and potential for wet conditions.
Getting There
To reach the trailhead, hikers can drive to the vicinity of Lake Lila, which is the nearest significant landmark. From the town of Long Lake, take New York State Route 30 south to Sabattis Road. Follow Sabattis Road west until you reach the turnoff for Nehasane Lake Road. There is a parking area near the trailhead where hikers can leave their vehicles. Public transportation options are limited in this remote area, so arriving by car is recommended.
Trail Experience
As you embark on your hike, the path meanders through a mixed forest of coniferous and deciduous trees, offering a canopy of greenery during the summer months and a colorful palette in the fall. The trail surface is a combination of packed earth and rocky patches, so sturdy footwear is advisable.
Flora and Fauna
The area is rich in wildlife, and hikers may spot white-tailed deer, beavers, and a variety of bird species, including the common loon whose haunting calls echo across the lake. The forest floor is dotted with wildflowers and ferns, and you may encounter the occasional berry bush, a treat for both humans and local bears (always be bear aware).
Historical Significance
The region around Nehasane Lake Road is steeped in history, with the Adirondacks being a storied part of New York's past. The area was once the hunting and fishing grounds of Native American tribes before European settlers arrived. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the Adirondacks became a popular retreat for the wealthy, who built grand "Great Camps" in the wilderness. While hiking, you may come across old logging roads and remnants of the past that speak to the area's rich heritage.

Preparation
Before setting out, hikers should be prepared with water, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. The trail can be muddy or have puddles after rain, so waterproof boots are recommended. Insect repellent is also a good idea, particularly during the warmer months when mosquitoes and black flies are prevalent.
Remember to leave no trace, pack out all your garbage, and respect the natural environment to preserve it for future generations of hikers and wildlife.
