Walk alongside Ireland's only true fjord on this stunning coastal route following the shore of Killary Harbour. You will be walking along a historic "Famine Road"—a path built in the 1840s as a relief project during the Great Famine—making for a poignant and memorable journey. Along the way, enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Mweelrea mountains, the Atlantic Ocean, and the Twelve Bens, while keeping an eye out for mussel farms operating in the deep waters of the fjord below.
Route & Terrain Starting Point: Turn off the N59 onto the side road heading towards Killary Sheep Farm. Spots to park are available in lay-bys near the start.
Trail Conditions: The majority of the walk follows a gravel path. However, sections closer to the Killary Hostel can get quite boggy, so sturdy hiking boots are strongly recommended.
Fantastic walk—enjoy the views!
