A short but strenuous trail 9 km north of Kilkee, the Slieve Binnian Trail’s 5.5km loop has a quick elevation gain of 1748ft to reach the summit of Slieve Binnian. One of the twelve Mourne Mountains, the highest mountain range in Northern Ireland, Slieve Binnian or ‘Mountain of the Little Peak’ is the third highest peak in Northern Ireland at 2,451 ft. A well-marked trail offering a tough climb but scenic 360-degree views over the Mourne Mountains, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and the Silent Valley Reservoir. Best hiked in good weather as the route is fairly exposed with no tree cover and visibility can be limited at the peak in bad weather. A good level of fitness is required whilst there are other paths up to the summit more suited to beginners.
