A rewarding short out and back trail leading to the beautiful glacial Lake Alta. A medium 3.4 km located near Queenstown, within the Remarkables Mountain Range and Conservation Area in the Otago region, in the South Island of New Zealand. To reach the trail head from the south of the Kawarau River on the eastern side of Lake Wakatipu, turn off the SH 6 at the signposted junction for the ‘Remarkables ski’ area. To drive up to the Remarkables skifield you need to pay a road toll (around $10 NZD). An easy-to-follow walk with a steady climb at the start, the trail heads out on the road behind the Remarkables ski buildings and ski lift and follows cairns along the path up to the lake for beautiful views and alpine flora and fauna. This alpine region is susceptible to cold temperatures, snow, and high winds year-round so hikers should come prepared with appropriate footwear and clothing.
