This area is steeped in history, having been a hub for copper mining since the 16th century. ### Low Water Continuing your ascent, you'll reach Low Water at approximately 3 km (1.9 miles) into the hike. ### Old Man of Coniston From Low Water, the trail becomes steeper as you make your way to the summit of the Old Man of Coniston, which stands at 803 meters (2,634 feet) above sea level. The final push to the summit covers an additional 1 km (0.6 miles) with an elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet). Upon reaching the top, you'll be rewarded with sweeping views of Coniston Water, Morecambe Bay, and even the Isle of Man on a clear day. The summit cairn and trig point mark the highest point of the hike.
### Descent and Return The descent follows a different path, creating a loop that takes you past Goat's Water, another beautiful tarn, before rejoining the main trail. The descent is less steep but requires careful footing, especially in wet conditions. As you make your way back to the trailhead, you'll pass through more open moorland and eventually return to the woodlands near Coniston.
