Starting near Clark County, Wisconsin, the Levis Mound and Toad Road Peak Loop is a captivating 6 km (approximately 3.7 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of around 200 meters (656 feet). This trail is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers looking for a rewarding adventure.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to the Levis Mound Trailhead, located near the intersection of Fisher Avenue and Levis Mound Road. If you're using public transport, the nearest significant town is Neillsville, Wisconsin. From Neillsville, you can take a taxi or rideshare service to the trailhead, which is about a 20-minute drive.

As you embark on the trail, you'll first encounter a dense forest of oak, maple, and pine trees. The initial section is relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the hike. After about 1 km (0.6 miles), the trail begins to ascend gradually.
At approximately 2 km (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll reach Levis Mound. This area is known for its unique geological formations, including large sandstone outcrops. The mound offers panoramic views of the surrounding forest and farmlands, making it an excellent spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing on, the trail leads you to Toad Road Peak, the highest point of the loop. This section involves a steeper climb, gaining about 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over 1.5 km (0.9 miles). The peak provides stunning vistas and is a great place to observe local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and a variety of bird species.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. In spring and summer, you'll find wildflowers such as trilliums and lady's slippers. The forest canopy provides a habitat for numerous bird species, including woodpeckers, owls, and songbirds. Keep an eye out for small mammals like chipmunks and squirrels scurrying along the forest floor.
The region around Levis Mound has historical significance dating back to the Native American tribes who once inhabited the area. The descent from Toad Road Peak is gradual, allowing you to enjoy the serene environment as you make your way back to the trailhead. The final 2 km (1.2 miles) of the loop are relatively flat, passing through a mix of forest and open meadows.
