I decided on Scotland for this year's long distance hike because of John Muir and the hike named after him. I had read the reviews and knew there would be tarmac, but what I didn't know was the tarmac would be 80% - 85% of the hike. It killed my feet and I am an avid hiker. I honestly don't belive John Muir would want his name attached to this hike. I don't regret completing it, but I also won't recommend it. I was thankful for five nights off before starting the West Highland Way so my feet could recover. (Which they did and are doing great on this hike. 😁)

St.Columba's Way was my third long hike and the first outside of Scandinavia. I really enjoyed the hike. The marking of the route is close to non existing. I used the app most of the time. There are some web sites you can use as well. I did the trip in ten days, but can recommend somewhat shorter stages than I had. Out on the Isle of Mull there are basically two main routes to Craignure. The first is a quite simply along the A849. The second, St Columba’s Way, and the more adventurous route along the south of Mull, runs mainly along the coast. Between Fionnphort and Lochbuie the going is varied and difficult. The path is ill-defined, boggy, and overgrown. I don't recommend this route. Due deerstalking I hiked followed the road East of Loch Assapol to the A849 and followed that towards Pennyghael and then descended to Carsaig and followed the beautiful coastal path from there. From Dalmally to Bridge of Orchy I followed the app map but I would recommend to hike south of the river to the bridge instead. I spent every night in a tent and it was possible to find a spot along most of the way. A bit difficult when I got close to Dundee so here I would recommend to hike the Tay Road Bridge to find a spot. There are places to stock up and eat along the way.

Went over late Friday night after work. Parked at kilchattin Bay walked a couple of miles just past the light house. wildcamped fab spot with water source. Next day was stunning the view were amazing, really enjoyed the first real day. very limited water sources eventually found a spot to wild camp nearly 14 miles. Would have continued but knew there wasn't many places to wild camp. Sunday we walked through the forest then onto a bike trail nearly to Ettrick Bay then you turn off on a farmer's road, then through fields then through Boggie fields until you get to a forest. limited water source again. No real views tbh.. We seen a sign through the forest telling us to take a right but the map we had told us to continue through the forest to the road. then about 6miles of road we walking. We realised we wish we had followed the sign we had seen. Buses were limited due to being a Sunday managed to get a lift back to get car to get ferry back home. First day stunning, second day was more just a slog but glad I did it.
