“Discover Yorkshire's splendor on a historic hike through dramatic cliffs, waterfalls, and limestone pavements.”
Embarking on the Gordale Scar and Malham Cove loop trail, hikers will experience the quintessential beauty of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. This 11 km (approximately 6.8 miles) journey begins near the village of Malham, North Yorkshire, England, with an elevation gain of around 200 metres (656 feet), offering a medium difficulty level that is suitable for most walkers with a reasonable level of fitness.
Getting to the Trailhead
The trailhead is accessible by car, with parking available in Malham village. For those using public transport, buses run to Malham from nearby towns such as Skipton and Settle. Upon arrival in Malham, the trailhead can be found just a short walk from the village center, where you'll find the National Park Centre as a significant landmark to start your hike.
The Route
As you set off from the village, the path leads you through lush fields dotted with grazing sheep, typical of the Yorkshire countryside. The trail then takes you towards Gordale Scar, a dramatic limestone ravine carved by Ice Age meltwaters. The imposing cliffs and the thundering waterfall within the Scar are a sight to behold, especially after heavy rains.
After exploring Gordale Scar, the route loops back towards Janet's Foss, a charming waterfall surrounded by woodland. The name 'Foss' is the old Norse word for waterfall, and local legend has it that Janet, a fairy queen, lived behind the falls.
Historical Significance
The entire area is steeped in history, with evidence of settlements dating back to the Iron Age. The limestone landscape has been shaped over millions of years, and the dry valleys and pavements are of significant geological interest.
Wildlife and Nature
As you continue, keep an eye out for the unique flora and fauna that inhabit the limestone pavement areas. Rare plants, such as wild thyme and orchids, can be found, and the birdlife includes peregrine falcons and the occasional redstart.
Malham Cove
The trail then leads to the base of Malham Cove, a huge curved limestone cliff formation that once boasted a waterfall higher than Niagara Falls. Climbing the steps to the top of the Cove, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The limestone pavement atop the Cove is a fascinating feature, with its clints (blocks) and grikes (fissures) creating a unique habitat.
