“Embark on an enchanting 5 km journey through Cornish history and coastal splendor at Rinsey Head.”
The Rinsey Head Circular Walk is a scenic coastal path that offers a blend of Cornish history, rugged landscapes, and panoramic sea views. Spanning approximately 5 kilometers (about 3.1 miles) with an elevation gain of around 100 meters (328 feet), this loop trail is situated near Cornwall, England, and is rated as medium difficulty due to its undulating terrain and narrow cliffside paths.
Getting to the Trailhead
To reach the trailhead, you can drive to Rinsey, which is located near the town of Helston. There is a small car park at Rinsey Head, which serves as the starting point for the walk. If you're using public transport, the nearest bus stops are in the nearby villages, from where you can walk or take a taxi to the trailhead.
Navigating the Trail
As you embark on the walk, you'll be greeted by the sight of Wheal Prosper, an old engine house that stands as a relic of Cornwall's rich mining heritage. The trail leads you along the cliff tops, where you'll be treated to views of the Atlantic Ocean crashing against the rocks below. The path can be narrow and close to the edge in places, so caution is advised, especially in windy conditions.
After about 1.5 kilometers (just under a mile), you'll reach the highest point of the trail, where you can take a moment to enjoy the expansive views before descending towards Trewavas Head. Here, you'll find another engine house, Wheal Trewavas, perched precariously on the cliff edge—a testament to the area's historical significance during the 19th-century mining boom.
Flora and Fauna
The trail is rich in wildlife, with opportunities to spot seabirds such as fulmars, cormorants, and shags. During the spring and summer months, the coastal heathland blooms with colorful wildflowers, including heathers and gorse, adding a splash of color to the landscape.
Coastal Features
Continuing along the path, you'll pass by small coves and rugged bays, each with their own unique charm. The trail can be rocky and uneven in sections, so sturdy footwear is recommended. As you loop back towards the starting point, the path meanders inland slightly, giving you a chance to experience the quieter countryside before concluding your walk at the Rinsey Head car park.
Preparation and Safety
Before setting out, ensure you have appropriate clothing for changeable weather, as conditions can shift rapidly along the coast. A map and compass are always recommended for navigation, but for a more modern approach, the HiiKER app provides detailed maps and trail information that can be accessed on your smartphone.
Remember to carry enough water and snacks for the journey, and be mindful of the trail's proximity to cliff edges. Always respect the local environment by staying on marked paths and taking any litter back with you.
By preparing adequately and respecting the trail's natural and historical features, hikers can fully enjoy the beauty and heritage of the Rinsey Head Circular Walk.
