Fortification Hill Trail

The Fortification Hill Trail is a moderately challenging hike located near Mohave County, Arizona, offering panoramic views of Lake Mead and the surrounding desert landscape. Spanning approximately 6 kilometers (about 3.7 miles) round trip, the trail features an elevation gain of roughly 400 meters (about 1,312 feet), making it a rewarding trek for those looking to experience the beauty of the Arizona wilderness.

Getting to the Trailhead To reach the trailhead, hikers can drive to the parking area located off of Highway 93, near the Hoover Dam. From Las Vegas, take US-93 South for about 30 miles. After crossing the Mike O'Callaghan–Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, look for the turnoff to the trailhead on the right side of the road. There is no direct public transportation to the trailhead, so a personal vehicle or a taxi/ride-share service is required.

The Hike The hike begins on a well-defined path that gradually ascends through the desert terrain. The trail is not shaded, so it's essential to wear sun protection and bring plenty of water, especially during the hotter months. The initial section of the trail is relatively easy, but as you progress, the incline increases, and the path becomes rockier.

Landmarks and Scenery As you climb, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna that call this area home. You may spot desert bighorn sheep, jackrabbits, and a variety of bird species. The plant life includes cacti, creosote bushes, and wildflowers that bloom in the spring.
