Just minutes away from the town of Mole Creek, within the Alum Cliffs State Reserve, visit the lookout from Tulampanga or the Alum Cliffs for spectacular views from this, a site of spiritual and social significance for Tasmanian Aboriginals due to the ochre that can be found in the region. (An earthy natural pigment found in the soil and is one of the key foundations of Australian Indigenous art.) The Alum Cliffs Walk is one of Tasmania’s ’60 Great Short Walks’; a gently undulating 1-mile out-and-back trail that starts and ends at Mersey Hill Road car park, Tasmania along a well-maintained, all-weather track that gently climbs through the forest before reaching the lookout on the cliffs; overlooking surrounding peaks, a vast forest canopy and the gorge of the Mersey River below. This trail is usually completed in around 40 mins. Caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here. The trail elevation means it’s graded as Medium difficulty but this walk is generally considered to be an easy route, with some ups and downs but accessible to most ages and abilities. Although it is not wheelchair accessible, there is a wheelchair-friendly walk near Mole Creek, called the Pine Lake Walk, with no steps and along a boardwalk, it is about a 40-minute drive away from Mole Creek – find this on your route planner or on your hiking map.
