The Riesling Trail is a 20 mi point-to-point walking and cycling trail that starts at the Auburn Railway Station building and ends at the Old Barinia Railway Siding, Barinia Road, Stanley Flat, South Australia. The trail is graded as Medium. Usually hiked in 1 -2 days or cycling within 1 day, this flat, well-maintained hiking and biking trail follows the old railway line, dating back to the 1860s, that ran between Adelaide and Spalding. Now it’s a popular recreational gravel track that was reopened in 1994, winding through beautiful countryside, passing many of the regions famous cellar doors, including that of Sevenhill Cellars, the award winning winery that’s still producing today and the first to be established in the Clare Valley in 1851. For information on how we grade trails, please click here, and caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here. This is a wheelchair, pushchair and family friendly trail, whether you’re walking or riding, and one that is suitable to a range of fitness levels. Car parking and toilets are also available, and as this trail runs through wine country, there are plenty of wineries to stop at and enjoy on route so if you find yourself ‘unable’ to cycle back, transfers and taxis for you and your wine are available. It’s advised to enquire about these services at the time of booking. Bike hire is available too if you change your mind about walking this route, as are organised tours with locals guides that can show you the way. The trail is dog-friendly but individuals should enquire at private accommodations or stops on route to check if dogs are permitted to stay.
