The Blue Gorge - Ooline Creek Trail is found in Sundown National Park, in southern Queensland, 250km southwest of Brisbane via Stanthorpe, and 71km north-west of Tenterfield. The trail begins at The Permanent Waterhole or Broadwater, less than a mile from the Broadwater campsite. This is a permanent waterhole and is a haven for wildlife. At the campsite, there is parking, toilets and showers and other facilities. Booking a place at the campsite in advance is advised, especially at peak times. The trail is just over 34km and is strenuous. It involves crossing over many miles of river rocks and the climb up Ooline Creek includes some waterfall climbs. These should only be attempted when they are slow flowing. Likewise, the descent down to the Blue Gorge is very steep and on rocks which become slippery and potentially lethal in wet weather. The path may also be overgrown in places and difficult to find so a compass and a map are a necessity on the trail. It is a picturesque trail and the ooline tree, which is dotted about, is a medium to large tree with bright green leaves and a rough bark. A living relic; it dates back over 1.6 million years to a time when Australia was much wetter than it is today. Watch out for skinks, a type of lizards sunbathing on the rocks.Based on our data, the trail is graded as Medium. For information on how we grade trails, please click here.
