The Scenic Rim Trail is a challenging 26 mi point-to-point trail that starts at Thornton View Trailhead, Queensland and ends at the Crest car park at Cunninghams Gap, Tregony. A fairly new Great Walk, the Scenic Rim trail has a total elevation gain of 5925 ft and is graded as Difficult; intended as a one-way hiking route as it is signposted only from north to south by orange triangular markers, but these can become sporadic at times and even harder to navigate in bad weather. For this reason, this mountain trail, within the Main Range National Park, is recommended for more experienced bushwalkers who have some navigational skills. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. This trail can be completed in approximately 3 days and the terrain is a mixture of steep, rough mountain trail, with some areas of scrambling and creek crossings. There are some easier rainforest tracks and the tough climbs are worth the effort for the far-reaching views from the mountain peaks and ridgelines. (Caution is advised on trail times as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here.) Camping is permitted in the national park where fees apply; there are 3 designated campsites which feature basic composting toilets and water, but for those looking for a wilder adventure ‘bush camping’ is available also with some recommended spots. https://parks.des.qld.gov.au/parks/main-range/camping Highlights of this Great Walk are the spectacular views over the dense forest canopy after every climb; vistas from the Sunrise Lookout (at sunrise) and the detour to Cascade Falls - a popular stop for bushwalkers. On route keep an eye out for snakes on the trail and rock wallabies! Parking is available at the Thornton View trailhead, but transport back to your vehicle will need to be arranged, and dogs are not allowed on this trail.
