Touted as being one of, if not the best, one day trek in New Zealand, the Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km trail with steep climbs, difficult terrain and often unpredictable weather. This track, rated as difficult, is in an alpine environment and has the highest number of search and rescues for hikers in New Zealand; being properly equipped is essential for this trail. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. Located in the Tongariro National Park, New Zealand’s oldest national park and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the track passes through areas with the perfect habitat for many of the native birds of New Zealand and there are many conservation projects afoot here. Dogs are not permitted in the park and caution is advised on trail times, as this depends on multiple variables. For more info, click here. Optional side tracks off of the alpine crossing include summiting Mt Tongariro and or Mt Ngauruhoe and will add time on to the advised trail time. Be aware though that both mounts cannot be done within the same day and the peaks are often 10 - 15 degrees cooler.
