The Maumturks is a 16-mile trail that starts in Tiernakill South, Ireland and ends in Leenaun, Ireland. Neighbouring the Twelve Bens, the Maumturks are a major mountain range in Connemara, County Galway. Considered to be extra difficult to hike, this trail is recommended only for experienced hikers and mountaineers due to its total elevation gain of 7821 ft and tough terrain. Taking in 8 peaks, many hikers take on the challenge of completing this trail in one day, whilst others spread the miles over two or three days. The trail forms a significant section of the Western Way trail, and it’s peaks, although not the highest, offer unrivalled and breath-taking views of the surrounding wilderness, lakes, forests and vast mountains, whilst on the clearest days the Atlantic coast and even the Dingle Peninsula come into view. The terrain is rugged, craggy and extremely hard under foot for the first half, whilst the second half continues with steep ascents and descents, this time on grassy, uneven ground with boggy, marshy areas. Being a mountain route, inclement weather and exposed mountainside makes having suitable gear and provisions fundamental to its completion, whilst confident navigational skills are a must. Pre and post rest and provisions can be found in surrounding towns like Leenaun.
