The Mount Bross trail is a challenging hike that takes you to the summit of the mountain. Trail is 4 miles out and back trip and elevation is approx. 2120 feet. The trail starts at the Kite Lake Trailhead, which is located about 12 miles (19 km) south of Alma, CO. From the trailhead, the trail begins with a steady ascent through a dense forest of spruce and aspen trees. After a short distance, the trail splits, with the left fork leading to the summit of Mount Bross and the right fork leading to the summit of Mount Lincoln. As you continue on the trail, the forest begins to thin out, and you'll start to get glimpses of the surrounding peaks. The trail becomes steeper and rockier as you gain elevation, and you'll need to use your hands and feet to scramble over some sections. As you near the summit, the trail becomes even more steep, and there are a few sections where you'll need to use your hands to pull yourself up.When you reach the summit, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks in the Mosquito Range and the surrounding area. The summit of Mount Bross is a great place to rest, eat a snack and take in the views. It's important to note that this is a strenuous hike and hikers should come prepared with appropriate gear and clothing, including sturdy hiking boots, plenty of water and snacks, and to be prepared for a full day of hiking. The trail is not maintained and is not frequently used, so hikers should be comfortable with route-finding and should be aware of the potential for loose rock and steep terrain. Also, it's best to check the weather forecast and trail conditions before heading out and to be aware of the altitude effects. For information on how we grade trails, please click here. This trail can be completed in approx 6 hrs 30 mins.
