The South Mount Elbert Trail from the Mount Elbert East Ridge trailhead is a challenging and strenuous hike that offers stunning views of the Sawatch Range in Colorado. The trail starts at the Mount Elbert East Ridge trailhead, which is located off of Halfmoon Road, and follows the South Mount Elbert Trail to the summit of Mount Elbert. The trail is 10.9 miles round trip, with an elevation gain of 4,356 feet.The trail begins by winding through a dense forest of aspen and pine trees, offering shade and a peaceful atmosphere. As you gain elevation, the trees give way to open meadows and rocky outcroppings. The trail becomes steeper as you approach the tree line, with a series of switchbacks that lead to the summit. The final ascent to the summit is a steep, rocky scramble that requires a bit of hand-over-foot climbing.The summit of Mount Elbert offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, including the Collegiate Peaks, Quandary Peak and La Plata Peak. The trail can be accessed from June through October, depending on snow levels.
