Ros Castle and Hepburn Crags Loop

Christmas 2025: From the car park it's a bit of a slog up a minor road onto the moors. Left to ROS Castle is quite steep. Back and across the moorland was pleasant but then we reached the woodland. A gate that worked took us in, but the path became very hard to follow, appearing and disappearing, and then blocked by fallen trees and undergrowth. At times we were just guessing, and then the path would appear for a few yards. After struggling we had to abandon it at a point where it went below a rugged outcrop, when it became too dangerous without ropes. Luckily at that point we were able to retreat 20 yards or so and descend through gaps to the return path but that descent was a fight at times. Not recommended.
