Ouachita National Forest is located in the United States, spanning across central Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma. Nearby cities include Hot Springs, AR, and Mena, AR, with smaller towns like Talihina, OK, and Mount Ida, AR, providing additional access points. Established in 1907, it is one of the oldest national forests in the southern U.S., originally designated as Arkansas National Forest before being renamed in 1926. The forest has a rich history, including its use as a training ground during World War II. The forest offers numerous parking facilities, with over 20 designated parking areas scattered throughout. While most parking areas are free, some may require a small fee, especially those near popular trailheads or campgrounds. Visitors are encouraged to check specific area regulations as some sites may have restrictions on overnight parking. The forest also contains historical sites like the Winding Stair Mountain National Recreation Area. Public transportation to Ouachita National Forest is limited. However, visitors can reach nearby towns via regional bus services or Amtrak, and then rent a car to explore the forest. This ensures flexibility and ease of access to the forest's many attractions.
