North Cascades National Park is located in the state of Washington, USA, near the U.S.-Canadian border. The park lies about 110 miles northeast of Seattle. Nearby towns include Marblemount, Rockport, and Newhalem. Known for its rugged terrain and dense forests, North Cascades is a hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest. Established as a national park in 1968, it was created to preserve its dramatic mountain ranges, over 300 glaciers, and pristine wilderness. The area is rich in history, from the Indigenous peoples who have long called it home to the mining and logging industries of the 19th century. Parking is available at multiple locations, primarily near popular trailheads, such as the Cascade Pass, Gorge Lake, and Diablo Lake areas. There are no entry fees for the park itself, but parking spaces are limited, especially during peak seasons. Larger vehicles such as RVs may encounter challenges due to narrow roads and smaller lots. The park is home to an incredible variety of wildlife. Black bears, cougars, mountain goats, and gray wolves roam the high country, while bald eagles, peregrine falcons, and spotted owls inhabit the skies. The park’s lakes and rivers are home to numerous fish species, including salmon and trout, which attract predators like otters and eagles. North Cascades National Park boasts diverse plant life, with western red cedars, Douglas firs, and hemlocks dominating lower elevations. As visitors hike higher, they’ll encounter alpine meadows brimming with wildflowers such as lupine, Indian paintbrush, and heather. The park’s glaciers and rugged peaks provide a stunning backdrop to its lush valleys. Notable landmarks include Diablo Lake, with its striking turquoise waters, the jagged peaks of the Picket Range, and the dramatic Cascade Pass. There is no direct public transportation to the park; most visitors arrive by car. However, some tour companies offer transportation services from Seattle or nearby areas.
