Mount Rainier National Park is located in the state of Washington, USA, about 60 miles southeast of Seattle. Nearby towns include Ashford, Packwood, and Enumclaw. The park was established in 1899, making it one of the earliest national parks in the United States. It was created to protect Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano that rises to 14,411 feet, as well as the surrounding alpine landscapes. Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous U.S., with over 25 major glaciers. The mountain has long been a symbol of natural beauty and is also considered sacred by local Native American tribes. Parking is available at several key locations within the park, including Paradise, Sunrise, Longmire, and the Carbon River entrance. Parking can be limited during peak summer months, especially at popular trailheads. Fees are required for park entry, but there is no separate fee for parking. RVs and large vehicles may face some restrictions in certain areas due to the narrow and winding roads. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including black bears, elk, mountain goats, and marmots. Birdwatchers might spot species such as the northern spotted owl, Steller's jay, or Clark's nutcracker. The varied ecosystems support many animals due to the park's elevation changes and rich habitats. Mount Rainier National Park is known for its lush flora, featuring old-growth forests of Douglas fir, western red cedar, and western hemlock at lower elevations. In the summer, the park's meadows explode with colorful wildflowers such as lupine, paintbrush, and avalanche lilies. Notable landmarks include the Paradise area, renowned for its panoramic views, the Nisqually River, and Reflection Lakes. Hiking and mountaineering opportunities abound, with the Wonderland Trail encircling the entire mountain. Public transportation to the park is limited, with most visitors arriving by car. Some shuttle services and tours are available from nearby towns.
