Yellowstone National Park, located in the U.S. states of Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, is the world’s first national park, established on March 1, 1872. The park spans over 3,400 square miles, with its northern entrance near Gardiner, Montana, the western entrance near West Yellowstone, Montana, the southern entrance near Jackson, Wyoming, and the eastern entrance near Cody, Wyoming. Nearby towns include Cody, Jackson, and West Yellowstone. The park was established to preserve the unique geothermal features and wildlife of the region. Yellowstone is renowned for its geothermal activity, including the iconic Old Faithful geyser, the Yellowstone Caldera (one of the largest active volcanic systems), and numerous hot springs and fumaroles. The park's establishment marked the beginning of the modern national park system and has since become a cornerstone of conservation efforts. Parking facilities are available at key locations within the park, including major visitor centers such as Old Faithful, Mammoth Hot Springs, and Canyon Village. There are multiple parking lots and pull-offs for visitor convenience, but during peak season, these areas can become crowded. Entrance fees apply, with annual passes available for frequent visitors. Yellowstone is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including grizzly bears, black bears, wolves, bison, and elk. Its varied ecosystems support numerous species of birds and smaller mammals. Vegetation ranges from lush forests of lodgepole pine and Douglas fir to alpine tundra and sagebrush steppe. Notable features within the park include the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Yellowstone Lake (the largest high-altitude lake in North America), and the Lamar Valley, known for its wildlife viewing opportunities. Public transportation options are limited, so most visitors use private vehicles or join guided tours. Shuttle services are available from some gateway cities, and seasonal tour buses offer access to key sites within the park.
