Shenandoah National Park is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, USA. It stretches across a long, narrow region of northwestern Virginia, with nearby cities including Front Royal, Luray, and Charlottesville. The park is easily accessible from Washington, D.C., which lies about 75 miles to the east. Established in 1935, Shenandoah National Park was created to preserve the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains and offer a recreational haven for visitors. The park has a rich history, with remnants of early Appalachian settlers still present. The most famous feature of the park is Skyline Drive, a 105-mile scenic roadway that runs the length of the park and offers breathtaking views. Parking facilities are plentiful along Skyline Drive, with overlooks, trailheads, and visitor centers providing parking areas. There are over 70 pull-off points along the drive for visitors to stop and enjoy the views. A standard entrance fee applies, and visitors can purchase passes that grant access for a full week. Wildlife in the park is abundant, with black bears, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys, and eastern spotted skunks among the notable species. Birdwatchers can spot species like the peregrine falcon and pileated woodpecker. The park’s diverse habitats also support reptiles, amphibians, and a wide range of insects. Shenandoah’s flora includes an impressive variety of tree species, such as oak, hickory, and maple, as well as wildflowers like trillium and mountain laurel. The park is particularly renowned for its vibrant fall foliage, drawing leaf-peepers each autumn. Landmarks within the park include Old Rag Mountain, Hawksbill Peak (the highest point), and numerous waterfalls like Dark Hollow Falls. Public transportation options are limited, so most visitors arrive by car via nearby highways. The park is a popular destination for hiking, camping, and scenic drives.
