Carlsbad Caverns National Park is located in southeastern New Mexico, United States, within the Guadalupe Mountains. The park is renowned for its extensive underground limestone caves, including the massive Carlsbad Cavern, which features a range of impressive formations like stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. The nearest town is Carlsbad, about 20 miles northeast, with El Paso, Texas, being the closest major city, approximately 145 miles away. The caverns were discovered by settlers in the late 19th century, though they had long been known to Native American tribes. Carlsbad Caverns was established as a national monument in 1923 and later designated a national park on May 14, 1930. The park’s significance lies in both its geological wonders and its role in the early history of cave exploration and preservation. Parking at Carlsbad Caverns National Park is available at the visitor center, which serves as the main entrance to the caverns. There are over 350 parking spaces, including spots for RVs and buses. The park charges an entrance fee of $15 per person, with various passes available for frequent visitors. The parking areas tend to fill up quickly during peak tourist season, so arriving early is recommended. Wildlife at Carlsbad Caverns includes a variety of species adapted to the desert environment, such as mule deer, bobcats, and rattlesnakes. The park is also famous for its large population of Mexican free-tailed bats, which emerge from the cave at dusk in a spectacular display during the summer months. The flora in the park reflects the desert landscape, with common plants like yucca, prickly pear cactus, agave, and desert willow. The rugged terrain of the Chihuahuan Desert dominates the surface landscape. Notable features within the park include the Big Room, one of the largest underground chambers in North America, and the Bat Flight Amphitheater. Public transportation to the park is limited, and most visitors arrive by car from nearby towns. However, some private tour companies offer shuttle services from Carlsbad and surrounding areas.
