Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in western Texas, USA, near the border with New Mexico. The park protects the rugged Guadalupe Mountains, home to the highest peak in Texas, and is situated about 110 miles east of El Paso. The nearest towns include Dell City, Texas, and Whites City, New Mexico. The park was established on September 30, 1972, to preserve the unique geology, ecosystems, and cultural heritage of the region. The Guadalupe Mountains are part of an ancient fossilized reef from the Permian Period, making the area geologically significant. The park also preserves remnants of early Native American inhabitants, as well as historic sites from ranching and mining operations. Parking facilities are available at the Pine Springs Visitor Center, McKittrick Canyon, and Dog Canyon. The park has several designated parking areas, primarily located at trailheads and visitor centers. Entrance fees are $10 per person, valid for seven days, with annual passes available. Wildlife in Guadalupe Mountains National Park includes mule deer, black bears, mountain lions, and desert reptiles like the western diamondback rattlesnake. Birdwatchers may spot golden eagles, peregrine falcons, and a variety of songbirds. The park’s isolated location and varied elevations support a rich diversity of animal life. The park’s flora ranges from Chihuahuan Desert plants like yucca, agave, and sotol at lower elevations to woodlands of pinyon pine, juniper, and ponderosa pine at higher altitudes. The park is also famous for its fall foliage, particularly in McKittrick Canyon, where bigtooth maple trees create a stunning display of autumn colors. Notable landmarks within the park include Guadalupe Peak, the highest point in Texas at 8,751 feet, and the picturesque McKittrick Canyon. Public transportation to the park is unavailable, so most visitors arrive by car.
