Paparoa National Park is located on the west coast of New Zealand’s South Island, in the West Coast region. Greymouth and Westport are the nearest towns, providing access points to this stunning area. The park was established in 1987 to protect the unique limestone karst landscapes and ancient rainforests. Parking is available at key trailheads like Punakaiki and Pororari River, with a few designated areas for overnight parking. The park is home to native wildlife, including the great spotted kiwi, Westland petrel, and New Zealand’s endemic Hector’s dolphin along the coast. Flora is characterized by dense lowland podocarp forests, with species like rimu, kahikatea, and a variety of ferns. Notable features include the Pancake Rocks and Blowholes at Punakaiki, the dramatic limestone cliffs, and the scenic Paparoa Track, one of New Zealand’s Great Walks. Public transport options include bus services from Greymouth to Punakaiki, allowing visitors easy access to the park’s main attractions.
