Val Grande National Park is located in the Piedmont region of northern Italy, nestled within the province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola. The park is situated near the border with Switzerland and lies west of Lago Maggiore. Nearby towns include Domodossola, Vogogna, and Verbania, which are the closest urban centers offering accommodations and services for visitors. The park was officially established in 1992 to protect one of the largest wilderness areas in the Alps. Historically, Val Grande has been inhabited by humans for centuries, and traces of ancient shepherding and agricultural activity can still be found. During World War II, the area served as a stronghold for Italian partisans, adding to its rich historical significance. Val Grande National Park offers a few parking areas, most of which are located near trailheads in the towns and villages that border the park, such as Cicogna and Malesco. Parking is often free, though some areas may have time restrictions or limited availability, particularly during peak seasons. The park is home to diverse wildlife, including species such as red deer, chamois, ibex, and wild boar. Raptors like golden eagles and peregrine falcons soar above, while smaller species like marmots and foxes are also commonly spotted. The park’s unique habitat also supports rare amphibians, such as the alpine salamander. Val Grande’s flora includes typical alpine vegetation such as beech, fir, and larch forests, along with patches of alpine meadows and rhododendrons. In the lower elevations, you can find chestnut trees and various wildflowers. Public transport to Val Grande National Park is limited but available. Trains connect nearby towns like Domodossola and Verbania, and local buses run to villages like Vogogna and Cicogna, providing access to the park's entrances. Photo Credit: Fdbef and Ford c prefect
