Stelvio National Park is located in northern Italy, spanning the regions of Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige. Nestled in the central Alps, it borders Switzerland and is surrounded by the towns of Bormio, Prato allo Stelvio, and Peio. Covering approximately 1,307 square kilometers, it is one of the largest protected areas in Italy. The park was established in 1935, making it one of the oldest national parks in the country. Historically, the region played a significant role during World War I, as it was part of the front line between Italy and Austria-Hungary. Numerous remnants of trenches and fortifications from this period can still be found within the park. Parking facilities are available at various points of interest throughout the park, including near popular hiking trails and visitor centers. While many parking areas are free, some may require a small fee, particularly in busier locations. It is important to follow local regulations to protect the pristine alpine environment. Stelvio National Park is rich in wildlife. The park is home to iconic alpine species, including the ibex, chamois, and red deer. Golden eagles soar above, and the elusive lynx and brown bear can be spotted occasionally. The area also supports various bird species and smaller mammals, contributing to the park’s diverse ecosystem. The park’s flora is equally diverse, with alpine meadows blanketed in wildflowers during the summer. Larch, spruce, and Swiss pine forests cover the lower elevations, while higher areas feature rare alpine plants like the edelweiss. Notable landmarks within the park include the Stelvio Pass, one of the highest paved roads in Europe, and the Ortler, the highest peak in the Eastern Alps. Public transportation options include bus services from nearby towns, making the park accessible to visitors without a car. Photo Credit: Elch33
