Gran Paradiso National Park is located in the northwest of Italy, in the regions of Piedmont and Aosta Valley. It is nestled in the Graian Alps, bordering France to the west. The nearest cities include Aosta, Courmayeur, and Turin, while smaller towns like Cogne, Valsavarenche, and Rhêmes-Notre-Dame offer access points into the park. The park was established in 1922, making it Italy's first national park. Its creation was motivated by the need to protect the Alpine ibex, which was nearly extinct at the time. Previously, the area served as a royal hunting reserve for King Victor Emmanuel II, who helped ensure the conservation of the ibex by limiting hunting activities. Gran Paradiso National Park offers several parking facilities across its main entry points, particularly in Cogne, Valsavarenche, and Rhêmes-Notre-Dame. These areas have designated parking lots, though spaces can be limited during peak seasons. There may be fees, especially during tourist-heavy months, with a focus on promoting eco-friendly transportation. The park is known for its rich wildlife, with notable species including the Alpine ibex, chamois, marmots, golden eagles, and lynxes. The region is also home to a variety of bird species, such as bearded vultures. The park's flora is diverse, with larch and spruce forests covering lower altitudes, while alpine meadows filled with wildflowers, such as edelweiss, gentians, and saxifrages, dominate higher elevations. The tree line gives way to rugged rock and glaciers at the highest altitudes. Gran Paradiso itself, the park’s namesake peak, rises to 4,061 meters, offering stunning views. The park is accessible via public transport, with buses connecting major cities like Turin and Aosta to nearby towns such as Cogne and Valsavarenche. Photo Credit: Soumei Baba and Marc
