Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park is located in northern Germany, off the coast of the city-state of Hamburg, in the North Sea. This small but ecologically important park is part of the greater Wadden Sea, which spans the coastlines of Germany, the Netherlands, and Denmark. The park encompasses the area around the islands of Neuwerk, Scharhörn, and Nigehörn, approximately 100 kilometers from the city of Hamburg itself. Nearby towns on the mainland include Cuxhaven and Otterndorf. The park was established in 1990 to protect the tidal flats and the rich biodiversity of the Wadden Sea ecosystem. It is the smallest of Germany’s Wadden Sea national parks, but it plays a crucial role in preserving the tidal flats and salt marshes that provide habitat for a wide range of species. In 2009, the park was included in the UNESCO World Heritage listing of the Wadden Sea. Due to the park’s unique location, there are no direct parking facilities within the park itself. Visitors typically access the park via Cuxhaven, where parking is available at ferry terminals. From there, ferries or traditional "Wattwagen" horse-drawn carriages take visitors across the tidal flats to the island of Neuwerk. Fees apply for parking and ferry services. Hamburg Wadden Sea National Park is home to diverse wildlife, with migratory birds like oystercatchers, common terns, and avocets being notable inhabitants. Harbor seals and grey seals can often be seen resting on the sandbanks, and the area serves as an important breeding ground for fish and invertebrates. The native flora includes salt-tolerant plants such as sea lavender, glasswort, and common cordgrass. These species help stabilize the tidal flats and provide vital habitats for wildlife. Public transportation options include trains to Cuxhaven from Hamburg, followed by ferries to Neuwerk. Visitors can also hike or take a horse-drawn carriage during low tide to explore the park.
