Goulburn River National Park is located in New South Wales, Australia, within the state's Upper Hunter Valley region. It stretches along the Goulburn River, approximately 50 kilometers west of Merriwa and 70 kilometers east of Mudgee. The park is accessible from nearby towns such as Merriwa, Mudgee, and Denman. The park was established in 1983 to protect the diverse ecosystems along the Goulburn River, including sandstone cliffs, riverine environments, and woodlands. Prior to its establishment, the area was used for grazing and mining. Aboriginal rock art and other significant sites can be found within the park, reflecting the long-standing connection of the Wiradjuri, Gamilaraay, and Wonnarua peoples to the land. Goulburn River National Park provides several parking areas, primarily around camping spots such as Big River, Spring Gully, and Washpools. These areas offer convenient access to picnic sites and walking tracks. Parking is generally free, but visitors should be mindful of restrictions during wet weather, as some roads and parking areas may become inaccessible. Wildlife is abundant in the park, with species like eastern grey kangaroos, swamp wallabies, and koalas commonly seen. Birdwatchers can spot wedge-tailed eagles, azure kingfishers, and various parrots, while the Goulburn River itself is home to platypuses and water dragons. Nocturnal animals, including sugar gliders and owls, are also present. The park's flora includes eucalyptus woodlands dominated by species such as ironbark, white box, and river red gum. The riverbanks are lined with casuarinas, while spring wildflowers like orchids and grevilleas add seasonal color to the landscape. Notable features of the park include the towering sandstone cliffs that line the Goulburn River and ancient Aboriginal rock art sites. The river offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, and kayaking. Public transportation to the park is limited, so most visitors travel by car. Photo Credit: Natasha Web and Nick Cubbin
