Starting near Teton County, Wyoming, the Mikesell and Mail Cabin Walk is an invigorating out-and-back trail that stretches approximately 14 kilometers (around 8.7 miles) with an elevation gain of about 700 meters (2,297 feet). This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and a moderate challenge suitable for seasoned hikers and those looking to push their limits.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards Teton County, Wyoming, and look for the nearest significant landmark, which is the Teton County Library. From there, follow local signage to the trailhead. For those using public transport, the START Bus service operates routes that can get you close to the trailhead. Check the latest schedules and routes to plan your trip accordingly.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent, allowing hikers to warm up before tackling the steeper sections. As you progress, the path becomes more rugged, with a mix of dirt and rocky terrain. The initial 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) offer a gradual climb of about 200 meters (656 feet), making it a good warm-up for the more challenging sections ahead.
Around the 4-kilometer (2.5-mile) mark, you'll encounter the first significant landmark: a picturesque meadow that offers stunning views of the surrounding Teton Range. This is an excellent spot for a short break and some photography. Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as mule deer, elk, and various bird species that frequent this area.
The trail also has historical significance, as it was once used by early settlers and mail carriers navigating the rugged terrain of the Teton Range. The "Mail Cabin" part of the trail's name refers to an old mail cabin that used to stand along the route, serving as a rest stop for mail carriers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Although the original cabin no longer exists, the trail still carries the legacy of those early pioneers.
As you approach the halfway point, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. The next 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) involve an elevation gain of about 300 meters (984 feet), with several switchbacks that test your endurance. This section is densely forested, providing ample shade but also requiring careful navigation. Using a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER is highly recommended to stay on track.
The final stretch to the turnaround point involves a mix of steep climbs and flat sections, with an additional elevation gain of about 200 meters (656 feet) over the last 2 kilometers (1.2 miles). Upon reaching the highest point of the trail, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Teton Range and the surrounding valleys. This is the perfect spot to rest, refuel, and take in the breathtaking scenery before heading back.
Throughout the hike, you'll encounter a diverse range of flora, including wildflowers, pine trees, and aspens. The trail is also home to various wildlife species, so keep your eyes peeled for sightings of black bears, moose, and smaller mammals like marmots and squirrels. Always practice safe wildlife viewing by keeping a respectful distance and not feeding the animals.
The return journey follows the same path, allowing you to enjoy the downhill sections that were previously uphill challenges. Take your time to appreciate the changing perspectives and perhaps spot some wildlife you missed on the way up.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's essential to come prepared. Wear sturdy hiking boots, bring plenty of water, and pack snacks or a light meal. Weather in the Teton Range can be unpredictable, so dress in layers and carry a rain jacket. A trekking pole can also be helpful for the steeper sections.
By following these guidelines and being well-prepared, you'll have a rewarding and memorable experience on the Mikesell and Mail Cabin Walk.
