“Embark on a 15 km loop through Grand Teton's stunning landscapes and rich history.”
Starting your adventure near Teton County, Wyoming, the Boat Dock Trail and Cascade Canyon Trail offer a captivating loop of approximately 15 km (9.3 miles) with an elevation gain of around 500 meters (1,640 feet). This medium-difficulty trail is perfect for hikers looking to experience the stunning landscapes and rich history of the Grand Teton National Park.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Jenny Lake Visitor Center, which is a well-known landmark in the area. From there, you can find parking and begin your hike. For those using public transport, the START Bus service operates routes that can get you close to the park, but you may need to arrange a taxi or shuttle for the final leg to the Jenny Lake Visitor Center.
The loop begins near the Jenny Lake Boat Dock, a popular starting point for many hikes in the area. The initial section of the trail is relatively flat, making it a good warm-up as you walk along the shores of Jenny Lake. After about 2 km (1.2 miles), you’ll reach the Hidden Falls, a stunning waterfall that cascades down from a height of approximately 30 meters (98 feet). This is a great spot for a short break and some photos.
Continuing from Hidden Falls, the trail starts to ascend more steeply as you enter Cascade Canyon. This section is where you’ll gain most of the elevation, climbing about 400 meters (1,312 feet) over the next 5 km (3.1 miles). The canyon is flanked by towering cliffs and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. Keep an eye out for wildlife; moose, black bears, and marmots are commonly spotted in this area.
Using HiiKER for navigation is highly recommended, as the trail can be challenging to follow in some sections, especially where it intersects with other trails. Make sure to download the map before you start, as cell service can be spotty in the canyon.
The area around Cascade Canyon has a rich history. Native American tribes, including the Shoshone, used these trails for centuries before European settlers arrived. The canyon was also a favorite spot for early 20th-century mountaineers who were drawn to the rugged beauty of the Teton Range.
After reaching the upper part of Cascade Canyon, the trail loops back towards Jenny Lake. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to enjoy the serene beauty of the forest and meadows. The descent offers a different perspective of the landscape, with opportunities to see wildflowers and smaller streams.
As you approach the final 3 km (1.9 miles) of the loop, the trail flattens out again, leading you back to the Jenny Lake Boat Dock. This is a good time to reflect on the diverse landscapes and rich history you’ve experienced on this remarkable trail.
Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or someone looking to explore the natural beauty of the Grand Teton National Park, the Boat Dock Trail and Cascade Canyon Trail offer an unforgettable experience.
