Trail Overview

The trail begins at the Willow Lake Campground, where you can find parking and basic amenities. As you set off, the initial section of the trail meanders through dense forests of lodgepole pine and spruce, offering a cool and shaded start to your hike. The first 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) are relatively flat, allowing you to ease into the journey.

Elevation Gain and Terrain

After the initial flat section, the trail starts to ascend gradually. Over the next 4 kilometers (2.5 miles), you'll gain approximately 200 meters (656 feet) in elevation. The path becomes rockier and more uneven, so sturdy hiking boots are recommended. Keep an eye out for tree roots and loose stones that could pose tripping hazards.

Wildlife and Flora

As you climb, the forest opens up to reveal stunning alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers in the summer months. This area is home to a variety of wildlife, including mule deer, elk, and the occasional black bear. Birdwatchers will also be delighted by the presence of species such as the Clark's Nutcracker and the Mountain Bluebird.

Reaching Snake Lake

Around the 6.5-kilometer (4-mile) mark, you'll reach the highest point of the trail, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. From here, the trail descends slightly towards Snake Lake. The lake itself is a serene, crystal-clear body of water nestled among towering cliffs and dense forest. It's an ideal spot for a picnic or a moment of reflection.

Historical Significance

The Wind River Range has a rich history, with evidence of Native American presence dating back thousands of years. The Shoshone tribe, in particular, has deep ties to this land. As you hike, you may come across ancient petroglyphs and other archaeological sites that offer a glimpse into the region's storied past.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's moderate difficulty and varying terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to stay on track. Weather conditions can change rapidly in the mountains, so be prepared with appropriate clothing and gear. Always carry enough water, snacks, and a first-aid kit.

Return Journey

The return journey follows the same path back to Willow Lake Campground. As you descend, take the time to enjoy the changing perspectives and perhaps spot some wildlife you missed on the way up. The total round trip will bring you back to your starting point after approximately 13 kilometers (8 miles) of hiking.

This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, moderate challenge, and historical intrigue, making it a rewarding experience for any hiker.
