Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, Pinedale, Wyoming. From Pinedale, take Fremont Lake Road north for about 10 miles (16 km) until you reach the trailhead parking area. Public transport options are limited, so renting a car or arranging a shuttle service from Pinedale is recommended.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a dense forest of lodgepole pines and aspens. After the first 3 km (1.9 miles), you will encounter a series of switchbacks that will take you up to a ridge, offering stunning views of the Wind River Range. This section gains about 300 meters (984 feet) in elevation.

Mid-Trail Highlights

At around the 7 km (4.3 miles) mark, you will reach a small alpine meadow, a perfect spot for a short break. The trail continues to climb steadily, and after another 2 km (1.2 miles), you will come across a crystal-clear mountain stream. As you hike, you are traversing land that has been historically significant for the Shoshone and Arapaho tribes. These indigenous peoples used the area for hunting and gathering for centuries. The trail itself was later used by early trappers and explorers in the 19th century.

Final Ascent and Section Corner Lake

The final 4 km (2.5 miles) to Section Corner Lake are the most challenging, with an elevation gain of about 500 meters (1640 feet). The trail becomes rockier and more exposed, so be prepared for wind and sudden weather changes. Upon reaching Section Corner Lake, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and the serene, turquoise waters of the lake. This is a great spot for lunch and some well-deserved rest.
