Del Campo Peak and Foggy Lake via Monte Cristo Trail

Starting your journey near Snohomish County, Washington, the trailhead for this adventure is accessible by car, with parking available at the Barlow Pass on the Mountain Loop Highway. The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush forest, following the Monte Cristo Trail. This initial section is relatively easy, allowing you to warm up as you traverse through dense stands of Douglas fir and western hemlock. After approximately 3.2 km (2 miles), you will reach the historic mining town of Monte Cristo. This ghost town, once a bustling hub during the late 19th-century gold rush, now offers a glimpse into the past with remnants of old buildings and mining equipment scattered around.

Monte Cristo to Foggy Lake

Continuing past Monte Cristo, the trail becomes steeper and more challenging. As you ascend, the forest begins to thin, offering occasional views of the surrounding peaks. After about 6.4 km (4 miles) from the trailhead, you will reach the base of the switchbacks that lead up to Foggy Lake. This section is strenuous, with an elevation gain of approximately 610 meters (2,000 feet) over the next 3.2 km (2 miles). The switchbacks can be particularly demanding, so take your time and ensure you have plenty of water.

Foggy Lake is a stunning alpine lake nestled in a cirque surrounded by jagged peaks. Foggy Lake to Del Campo Peak

This section is approximately 2.4 km (1.5 miles) with an elevation gain of around 305 meters (1,000 feet).
