Augspurger Mountain Trail

Starting near Skamania County, Washington, the Augspurger Mountain Trail offers a challenging yet rewarding hike. This out-and-back trail stretches approximately 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) with an elevation gain of around 1400 meters (4593 feet). The trailhead is conveniently located near the town of Carson, WA, making it accessible by car. For those relying on public transport, the nearest significant landmark is the Carson General Store, from where you can arrange a local taxi or rideshare to the trailhead.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a moderate ascent through dense forest, characterized by Douglas firs and western hemlocks. Early on, you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that help manage the steep elevation gain. After about 3 kilometers (1.9 miles), the forest opens up to offer your first panoramic views of the Columbia River Gorge. This is a great spot to take a short break and hydrate.

Mid-Trail Landmarks

At around the 5-kilometer (3.1-mile) mark, you'll come across a small clearing known as "Augspurger Meadows." This area is particularly beautiful in the spring and early summer when wildflowers like lupines and Indian paintbrush are in full bloom. Keep an eye out for local wildlife; deer and elk are commonly spotted here, and if you're lucky, you might even see a black bear from a safe distance.

Continuing on, the trail becomes steeper and rockier as you approach the 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) point. Here, you'll find a significant landmark: the remnants of an old fire lookout tower. This spot offers a 360-degree view of the surrounding landscape, including Mount St. Helens to the north and Mount Hood to the south. It's an excellent place for a longer rest and some photography.

Final Ascent and Summit

The final push to the summit is the most strenuous part of the hike. The trail narrows and becomes more rugged, requiring careful footing. After another 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), you'll reach the summit of Augspurger Mountain. At an elevation of approximately 1100 meters (3609 feet), the summit provides breathtaking views of the Columbia River Gorge, the Cascade Range, and the sprawling forests below.

Historical Significance

The Augspurger Mountain area holds historical significance as part of the traditional lands of the Chinook and Klickitat tribes. The region was also explored by Lewis and Clark during their expedition in the early 1800s. The old fire lookout tower you pass on the way to the summit dates back to the early 20th century and was used to spot forest fires before modern technology took over.

Navigation and Safety

Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to keep track of your progress and ensure you stay on course. The trail is well-marked, but weather conditions can change rapidly, especially at higher elevations. Always carry a map, compass, and sufficient water and snacks.
