“Aldrich Butte via Tamanous Trail offers a scenic, moderately challenging hike in Washington's lush Pacific Northwest.”
Starting your hike near Skamania County, Washington, the Aldrich Butte via Tamanous Trail offers an invigorating journey through the lush landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. This out-and-back trail spans approximately 18 kilometers (around 11 miles) with an elevation gain of about 900 meters (roughly 2,950 feet), making it a moderately challenging adventure suitable for hikers with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Bonneville Hot Springs Resort & Spa, located at 1252 East Cascade Drive, North Bonneville, WA 98639. From there, it's a short drive to the trailhead. For those using public transport, you can take a bus to the North Bonneville area and then a short taxi ride to the trailhead.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through dense forest, offering a cool and shaded start to your hike. As you progress, the trail becomes steeper, and you'll encounter a series of switchbacks that will test your endurance. The first significant landmark is the Tamanous Trail junction, approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) in, where you can take a short detour to explore the surrounding area.
This region is rich in history, particularly related to the Native American tribes who once inhabited the area. The name "Tamanous" itself is derived from a Chinook word meaning "spirit" or "guardian," reflecting the deep cultural significance of the land. As you hike, you'll pass through areas that were once vital for trade and travel among indigenous peoples.
Around the 6-kilometer (3.7-mile) mark, you'll reach a plateau offering stunning views of the Columbia River Gorge. This is an excellent spot to take a break and soak in the panoramic vistas. The trail then continues to climb, and you'll notice a change in vegetation as you gain elevation, transitioning from dense forest to more open, rocky terrain.
Keep an eye out for local wildlife, including deer, black bears, and a variety of bird species. The area is also home to diverse plant life, from towering Douglas firs to vibrant wildflowers in the spring and summer months.
The final push to Aldrich Butte is the most challenging part of the hike, with steep inclines and rocky paths. However, the effort is well worth it. Upon reaching the summit, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and valleys. On a clear day, you can see Mount Hood to the south and Mount Adams to the north.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's essential to come prepared. Use HiiKER for accurate navigation and trail information. Ensure you have adequate water, snacks, and appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions. The trail can be slippery in wet conditions, so good hiking boots are recommended.
The descent follows the same path, offering a chance to revisit the beautiful landscapes and perhaps spot wildlife you missed on the way up. Take your time on the way down to avoid strain on your knees and enjoy the serene environment.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and physical challenge, making it a must-visit for any hiking enthusiast.
