“Embark on the Mount Erie Out and Back trail for a challenging 7 km hike with stunning summit views.”
Starting near Skagit County, Washington, the Mount Erie Out and Back trail offers a moderately challenging hike with a total distance of around 7 kilometers (approximately 4.3 miles) and an elevation gain of about 300 meters (roughly 984 feet). This trail is an out-and-back type, meaning you'll retrace your steps on the return journey.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards Skagit County and look for the Mount Erie Park entrance. The nearest significant landmark is the town of Anacortes, which is about a 15-minute drive from the trailhead. For those using public transport, you can take a bus to Anacortes and then a taxi or rideshare service to the park entrance.
The trail begins with a gentle ascent through lush forest, featuring a mix of Douglas fir, western hemlock, and cedar trees. As you progress, the trail becomes steeper, offering a good workout for your legs. The path is well-marked, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track.
At approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across a scenic viewpoint that offers a glimpse of Lake Campbell below. This is a great spot to take a short break and enjoy the natural beauty of the area. Continuing on, the trail becomes rockier and more challenging, requiring careful footing.
The Mount Erie area is home to a variety of wildlife, including deer, raccoons, and a plethora of bird species such as eagles and hawks. Keep an eye out for these creatures, especially in the early morning or late afternoon. The flora is equally diverse, with seasonal wildflowers adding splashes of color to the landscape.
Mount Erie holds historical significance as it was named by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841 after the Battle of Lake Erie. The area has long been a site of interest for both Native American tribes and early settlers. The summit was once used as a lookout point, and remnants of old trails and markers can still be found.
The final push to the summit is the most strenuous part of the hike, with a steep incline and rocky terrain. However, the effort is well worth it. Upon reaching the top, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the San Juan Islands, the Olympic Mountains, and even Mount Rainier on a clear day. This is an ideal spot for a picnic or simply to soak in the breathtaking scenery.
After enjoying the summit, retrace your steps back to the trailhead. The descent is easier but still requires caution, especially on the rocky sections. Make sure to leave no trace and pack out all your trash to keep this beautiful trail pristine for future hikers.
Wear sturdy hiking boots with good grip, bring plenty of water, and consider packing a light snack or lunch. Weather can change rapidly, so layers are advisable. Always check trail conditions before heading out, and use HiiKER for real-time updates and navigation assistance.
