Out and Back
“Explore Stuart Island's 3 km trail featuring lush forests, historic landmarks, and stunning marine views.”
Stuart Island Marine State Park offers a delightful 3 km (1.86 miles) out-and-back trail with an elevation gain of approximately 100 meters (328 feet). This trail is nestled near San Juan County, Washington, and is rated as medium difficulty, making it suitable for moderately experienced hikers.
To reach the trailhead, you can either take a private boat or use the Washington State Ferries to get to San Juan Island. From Friday Harbor, you can arrange for a water taxi or a private charter to Stuart Island. If you're driving, park your car at the ferry terminal in Anacortes, WA, and then take the ferry to Friday Harbor. Public transport options are limited, so planning ahead is crucial.
Starting near the dock area, the trailhead is easily accessible and well-marked. The initial section of the trail is relatively flat, winding through lush forested areas filled with Douglas firs and Western red cedars. As you progress, the trail begins to ascend gradually, offering glimpses of the surrounding marine environment.
At approximately 1 km (0.62 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the historic Stuart Island Schoolhouse. This charming building dates back to the early 1900s and serves as a reminder of the island's rich history. The schoolhouse is often open to visitors, providing a fascinating glimpse into the past.
Continuing along the trail, you'll reach the Turn Point Lighthouse at around the 1.5 km (0.93 miles) mark. This lighthouse, built in 1893, is still operational and offers stunning panoramic views of the Haro Strait and the Canadian Gulf Islands. The lighthouse grounds are a perfect spot for a rest and some photography.
The trail is abundant with native flora, including salal, Oregon grape, and various species of ferns. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as black-tailed deer, bald eagles, and the occasional harbor seal along the shoreline. Birdwatchers will particularly enjoy the diverse avian population, including woodpeckers, owls, and various songbirds.
Given the trail's moderate difficulty, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to ensure you stay on track. The trail is well-maintained but can be slippery in wet conditions, so appropriate footwear is essential. Carrying a map and a compass as a backup is always a good idea.
The return journey follows the same path, allowing you to revisit the scenic spots and perhaps notice details you missed on the way up. The descent is easier, but still requires caution, especially on steeper sections.
This trail offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, historical landmarks, and moderate physical challenge, making it a rewarding experience for those who venture to Stuart Island Marine State Park.
