Grandma's Cove and Crood Cove via South Beach Trail

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards American Camp Visitor Center, located at 4668 Cattle Point Rd, Friday Harbor, WA 98250. There is ample parking available near the visitor center. For those using public transport, take a ferry to Friday Harbor from Anacortes, and then a taxi or local shuttle service to the American Camp Visitor Center.

Trail Overview

The trail begins near the American Camp Visitor Center, a site rich in historical significance. This area was a key location during the Pig War of 1859, a border dispute between the United States and Britain. As you start your hike, you will be walking through a landscape that has witnessed significant historical events.

Flora and Fauna

The initial part of the trail takes you through a coastal prairie, where you can spot a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and early summer. Keep an eye out for the native Garry oak trees and the vibrant red of the Indian paintbrush flowers. The area is also home to black-tailed deer, red foxes, and a variety of bird species, including bald eagles and peregrine falcons.

Significant Landmarks

About 1 km (0.62 miles) into the hike, you will reach Grandma's Cove. This secluded beach is a perfect spot for a break. The cove is named after a local legend of a grandmother who used to frequent this spot. The beach offers stunning views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca and is an excellent place for tide pooling.

Continuing along the trail, you will head towards Crood Cove. This section of the trail is more forested, providing a cool, shaded walk. The forest is primarily composed of Douglas fir and Western red cedar. Approximately 1.5 km (0.93 miles) from the trailhead, you will arrive at Crood Cove, another beautiful beach area. This cove is less frequented, offering a more tranquil experience.
