For those using public transport, take a ferry to Friday Harbor from Anacortes, and then a taxi or local shuttle service to the American Camp Visitor Center.### Trail Overview The trail begins near the American Camp Visitor Center, a site rich in historical significance. This area was a key location during the Pig War of 1859, a border dispute between the United States and Britain. As you start your hike, you will be walking through a landscape that has witnessed significant historical events.### Flora and Fauna The initial part of the trail takes you through a coastal prairie, where you can spot a variety of wildflowers, especially in the spring and early summer. Keep an eye out for the native Garry oak trees and the vibrant red of the Indian paintbrush flowers. The area is also home to black-tailed deer, red foxes, and a variety of bird species, including bald eagles and peregrine falcons.### Significant Landmarks About 1 km (0.62 miles) into the hike, you will reach Grandma's Cove. This secluded beach is a perfect spot for a break. The cove is named after a local legend of a grandmother who used to frequent this spot.
