“Explore the Sourdough Ridge Loop for panoramic views, vibrant wildflowers, and rich history near Mount Rainier.”
Starting your adventure near Pierce County, Washington, the Sourdough Ridge Loop via Sunrise is a delightful 2 km (1.2 miles) loop trail with an elevation gain of approximately 100 meters (328 feet). This trail offers a moderate challenge, making it suitable for hikers with some experience.
To reach the trailhead, head towards the Sunrise Visitor Center in Mount Rainier National Park. If you're driving, take WA-410 E from Enumclaw, then follow the signs to Sunrise Road. The nearest significant landmark is the Sunrise Visitor Center, which provides ample parking. For those using public transport, the closest major city is Seattle. From Seattle, you can take a bus to Enumclaw and then arrange for a shuttle or taxi to the Sunrise Visitor Center.
Starting from the Sunrise Visitor Center, the trailhead is well-marked and easy to find. For navigation, I recommend using HiiKER to keep track of your progress and ensure you stay on the correct path.
As you begin your hike, you'll quickly ascend to Sourdough Ridge, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. The initial climb is steady but manageable, gaining about 100 meters (328 feet) in elevation over the first kilometer (0.6 miles).
The trail is renowned for its vibrant wildflower displays during the summer months. Look out for lupines, Indian paintbrush, and avalanche lilies. Wildlife is abundant in this area; you might spot marmots, pikas, and even the occasional black bear. Birdwatchers will enjoy sightings of Clark's nutcrackers and mountain bluebirds.
At approximately 1 km (0.6 miles) into the hike, you'll reach the highest point of the trail, where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Rainier to the southwest. This spot is perfect for a short break and some photography. Continuing along the ridge, you'll encounter several interpretive signs that provide historical context about the region, including information about the indigenous peoples who have long inhabited the area and the early explorers who first mapped these trails.
The descent back to the Sunrise Visitor Center is gradual and offers more stunning vistas. The trail loops back through alpine meadows, providing a different perspective on the landscape you saw on the ascent. The entire loop takes about 1-2 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views.
As you near the end of the loop, you'll pass through a section of subalpine forest, which offers a cool, shaded respite before you return to the trailhead. The trail is well-maintained, but it's always a good idea to check for any trail conditions or closures before you head out.
This hike is a perfect introduction to the beauty of Mount Rainier National Park, offering a mix of challenging terrain, stunning views, and rich natural history.
