Trail Overview

The trail begins at the Van Trump Park Trailhead, where you will immediately be greeted by lush forest surroundings. The initial section of the trail is relatively gentle, allowing you to warm up as you hike through dense stands of Douglas fir and western hemlock. After about 1.5 km (0.9 miles), you will encounter Christine Falls, a picturesque waterfall that cascades down a rocky gorge. This is a great spot for a quick rest and some photos.

Elevation Gain and Terrain

As you continue, the trail becomes steeper, and the elevation gain becomes more noticeable. Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you will reach the Comet Falls, one of the tallest waterfalls in Mount Rainier National Park, plunging nearly 100 meters (328 feet). The mist from the falls can be refreshing, but be cautious as the rocks can be slippery.

Flora and Fauna

The trail offers a rich variety of flora and fauna. In the lower sections, you will find an abundance of ferns and mosses, while higher elevations feature alpine meadows filled with wildflowers during the summer months. Keep an eye out for wildlife such as black-tailed deer, marmots, and various bird species.

Historical Significance

The Van Trump Trail is named after P.B. Van Trump, one of the first recorded individuals to summit Mount Rainier in 1870. This trail offers a glimpse into the historical routes used by early explorers and mountaineers.

Reaching Mildred Point

The final push to Mildred Point is challenging but rewarding. The trail narrows and becomes rockier, requiring careful footing. Upon reaching Mildred Point, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of Mount Rainier, the Nisqually Glacier, and the surrounding valleys. This vantage point is particularly stunning at sunrise or sunset, offering a breathtaking end to your hike.

Navigation and Safety

Given the elevation gain and varying terrain, it's advisable to use a reliable navigation tool like HiiKER to keep track of your progress and ensure you stay on the correct path. Always check weather conditions before you set out, as the trail can be hazardous in wet or icy conditions.

Return Journey

The return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead. Take your time descending, as the steep sections can be tough on the knees. Make sure to leave no trace and pack out all your trash to preserve the natural beauty of the area.

This trail offers a mix of natural beauty, historical significance, and a moderate challenge, making it a must-do for hikers visiting Mount Rainier National Park.
