Starting your adventure near Pierce County, Washington, the Frozen Lake, Mount Fremont, and 2nd Burroughs Mountain Loop is a captivating 14 km (8.7 miles) trail with an elevation gain of approximately 600 meters (1,968 feet). To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transportation. If driving, head towards the Sunrise Visitor Center in Mount Rainier National Park. The nearest significant landmark is the Sunrise Visitor Center, located at 55210 238th Avenue East, Ashford, WA 98304. For those using public transport, you can take a bus to Ashford and then arrange for a shuttle or taxi to the Sunrise Visitor Center.
The loop begins at the Sunrise Visitor Center, where you can find ample parking and restroom facilities. From here, the trail ascends gradually, offering panoramic views of Mount Rainier and the surrounding valleys. The first significant landmark you'll encounter is Frozen Lake, approximately 3.2 km (2 miles) into the hike. This serene alpine lake is a perfect spot for a short break and some photography.
Continuing from Frozen Lake, the trail splits towards Mount Fremont Lookout. This section is about 1.6 km (1 mile) long with a moderate incline. The lookout itself is a historic fire lookout tower, offering breathtaking views of the Cascade Range and, on clear days, even the Olympic Mountains. The elevation gain to this point is around 200 meters (656 feet).
Returning to the main loop, the trail then heads towards 2nd Burroughs Mountain. This segment is approximately 4.8 km (3 miles) from Frozen Lake and involves a more strenuous climb, adding another 400 meters (1,312 feet) in elevation. The summit of 2nd Burroughs Mountain provides a stunning 360-degree view, including a close-up of Mount Rainier's glaciers and the expansive Emmons Glacier.
