This medium-difficulty trail offers a rich tapestry of natural beauty, historical significance, and diverse wildlife.
To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards the nearest significant landmark, the town of Metaline Falls, Washington. From there, follow local roads to the trailhead. Public transport options are limited, so it's advisable to arrange a car or a shuttle service from Metaline Falls.
The loop begins with a gentle ascent through dense forests of Douglas fir and western red cedar. As you progress, the trail becomes steeper, offering glimpses of the surrounding Selkirk Mountains. The first significant landmark is Thunder Creek, approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) in, where you can enjoy the soothing sounds of cascading water.
The trail is a haven for nature enthusiasts. Keep an eye out for black bears, deer, and various bird species such as the pileated woodpecker and the northern goshawk. The flora is equally impressive, with wildflowers like lupine and Indian paintbrush adding splashes of color during the spring and summer months.
This region has a rich history, once inhabited by the Kalispel Tribe. The trail itself was used by early settlers and loggers, and remnants of old logging camps can still be found along the route. These historical markers offer a glimpse into the area's past and add an educational element to your hike.
After crossing Thunder Creek, the trail continues to climb, reaching the Shedroof Divide at around the 11-kilometer (6.8-mile) mark. This section offers panoramic views of the Selkirk Mountains and the Pend Oreille River Valley. The elevation gain here is significant, so take your time and enjoy the scenery.
The descent from Shedroof Divide is gradual, winding through alpine meadows and subalpine forests. This section is less strenuous, allowing you to fully appreciate the diverse ecosystems. The final stretch brings you back to the trailhead, completing the loop.
