The McKenzie Head Trail is a relatively flat path, making it accessible for all. The trailhead is easy to locate, marked by clear signage near the parking area. As you begin your hike, you'll find yourself surrounded by lush coastal vegetation, including Sitka spruce and western hemlock trees. The trail is well-maintained and easy to follow, but it's always a good idea to have a navigation tool like HiiKER for added assurance.
About 0.3 kilometers (0.2 miles) into the hike, you'll come across the remnants of a World War II-era bunker. This historical site offers a glimpse into the past, as the area was once part of the coastal defense system. Interpretive signs provide information about the bunker's role and the soldiers who were stationed there.
Continuing along the trail, you'll reach McKenzie Head itself, a small promontory offering stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. On a clear day, you can see the waves crashing against the rocky shoreline and even spot some marine wildlife, such as seals and seabirds. This viewpoint is approximately 0.5 kilometers (0.31 miles) from the trailhead.
The trail is rich in biodiversity. Keep an eye out for native plant species like salal and sword ferns. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of avian life, including bald eagles, ospreys, and various seabirds. The coastal environment also supports a range of small mammals and, occasionally, deer.
