This medium-difficulty trail offers a blend of natural beauty, historical significance, and a moderate challenge suitable for most hikers.

Getting There

To reach the trailhead, you can drive or use public transport. If driving, head towards Mason County and look for the nearest known address or significant landmark, which is the Hamma Hamma Campground. From there, follow the signs to the trailhead. For those using public transport, the nearest bus stop is in Hoodsport, WA. From Hoodsport, you may need to arrange a taxi or rideshare to the trailhead, as public transport options are limited in this remote area.

Trail Overview

The trail begins with a gentle ascent through a lush forest of Douglas firs and western hemlocks. The first 2 km (1.2 miles) are relatively easy, with a well-maintained path that gradually increases in elevation. As you hike, keep an eye out for the diverse flora and fauna. You might spot black-tailed deer, various bird species, and even the occasional black bear, so it's wise to carry bear spray and make noise to avoid surprising wildlife.

Significant Landmarks

Around the 3 km (1.9 miles) mark, you'll encounter the first significant landmark: an old-growth cedar tree that has stood for centuries. This tree is a testament to the area's rich natural history and offers a great spot for a short break and some photos.

Continuing on, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged. At approximately 5 km (3.1 miles), you'll reach a series of switchbacks that lead you up to a higher elevation. This section can be challenging, especially after rain, as the path can become slippery. Good hiking boots with strong grip are essential here.

Historical Significance

The Kennedy Falls area has a rich history tied to the logging industry of the early 20th century. As you hike, you'll notice remnants of old logging equipment and rail tracks, particularly around the 6 km (3.7 miles) point. These artifacts serve as a reminder of the region's industrial past and the transformation of the landscape over the years.

The Falls

The highlight of the trail is, of course, Kennedy Falls. At around 6 km (3.7 miles) from the trailhead, you'll hear the roar of the falls before you see them. The waterfall cascades down a rocky cliff, creating a misty, serene environment. This is an ideal spot for a longer break, where you can enjoy a packed lunch and take in the natural beauty.

Return Journey

The return journey follows the same path back to the trailhead. While descending, take your time to enjoy the views and perhaps spot any wildlife you may have missed on the way up. The descent is generally easier but still requires caution, especially on the steeper sections.

Navigation

For navigation, it's highly recommended to use the HiiKER app, which provides detailed maps and real-time GPS tracking to ensure you stay on the right path. The trail is well-marked, but having a reliable navigation tool can enhance your hiking experience and provide peace of mind.
